Soaking up Some North Carolina Sun!

Settling into Summer

As we settle into summer, I hope everyone’s able to enjoy the long, sunny days. Our family’s sure soaking up the sun. I cannot recall the last time we have been gone two Sundays in a row! However, all the reports I have received is that Highland’s services have been rooted in the strength and grace of our Lord.

We are continually resonating with this truth Paul writes: “"We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater.” (2nd Thessalonians 1:3, NASB).

While I would never make missing multiple weeks a practice, this is actually a mark of our maturity, Highland. May our roots continue to grow deeper, as our love for the Lord and for each other abounds! To those who served in any and every capacity, thank you! Thank you for all you do! The health of Highland would not be possible without you.

Luke’s the Human Claw!

our trip to orlando

Highland,

Our family had such a joyous vacation in Orlando. We spent some time soaking up some rays and making terrific memories! While there were many highlights, seeing these kiddos become “The Claw” was among the top! The kiddos in our family love this game! Seeing them become “The Claw” took the experience to an entirely new level!

It’s game time!

We also loaded up on pizza and junk food while we watched The College World Series. We all cram into the condo and watch the “Greatest Show on Dirt.” Always lots of fun! Every good vacation ends with coming home, though. Our family got back Monday and we got back into the swing of things. One of the richest blessings is that I get to do work that I am thankful to get back to doing! Humbled beyond words to serve as Pastor of Highland Community Church.

I will take her for ice cream anytime!

As our children are getting older and becoming more independent, Carrie and I are finding a few more moments to capture being together. Ice cream dates are some of our favorite ways to spend this newly discovered time together! It really is the little things – they add up to mean so, so much! Paul instructs Timothy this way regarding this very matter: “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content” (1st Timothy 6:6-8). Highland, let us prize and savor “godliness with contentment.”

Noah’s on Summer Staff @ Snowbird!

noah’s at snowbird

One major emotional adjustment we had to make was that Noah, our eldest, was not with us on vacation this year. He’s serving on Snowbird’s Summer Staff. He’s facilitating small groups, discussing God’s Word with campers and also guiding them down the Nantalhala River! While we missed him, I am so proud of him! Super thrilled he’s pursuing a personal relationship with Jesus, while helping foster a hunger for God’s Word in the lives of these campers throughout the summer! I continue to ask the Lord to let Noah experience life-abundant in His relationship with Christ. It’s in Christ that life becomes an adventure - may Noah experience His presence to the fullest! I invite you to pay with me, Highland.

A Trip Down the Hiwassee from years gone by.

Away Again this Weekend

We’ve been afforded the opportunity to sneak away again this weekend. We will be in North Carolina, mountain biking and floating down streams! This trip was up in the air for us, but we’ve been able to land it on our calendar! I am grateful that the Lord has given our family the chance to be together in such special places.

Darrick gets baptized.

Weekly Update

Highland, it was so enjoyable to worship together last Sunday! To corporately declare praise to the Name above every name in one accord is time I actually cherish in a deeper way as the years go by. For me, personally, corporately singing “The Beauty of the Heart of Christ” together, while Luke and Justin accompanied us, was very meaningful. As we’re coming out of a season of testifying, it’s fitting to say that this song best represents the cry of my heart.

Also, I have enjoyed getting back to our journey through Matthew. If you want to listen to last weeks’ sermon, it’s available through our audio page. This week, Billy will lead us in worship and I will continue in our series through Matthew. We will take on Matthew 7:13-23. I look forward to walking through these texts with you, Highland.

Reflecting back, though, to last Sunday – we witnessed a man be brought from darkness to light, Highland! Darrick professed Christ Jesus to be Lord and was baptized! The love of God has been poured into His heart by so many of you, Highland! He has now received the life-giving love of the Lord! I am so proud of how our love for Darrick abounds, drawing him to the love of His heavenly Father! Nothing can separate Darrick from the love of the Lord; for His love is unfailing and enduring – for us all!

This upcoming week, our family will be on vacation. My side of the family takes a trip to Orlando this time of year. We have the best time soaking up some sun and spending time together. While we enjoy getting away, know we miss you, Highland. Even still, you are in capable hands! Billy and Justin will be leading the June 15th Service. These two men are among the most honorable and trustworthy men on planet earth right now. They love the Lord with steadfastness and boldness, yet coat both in such gentleness. You, indeed, will be blessed by their stewarding of the service.

Let’s Walk in the Light, Highland, together.

in closing

I love you, Highland. I am grateful to walk alongside you in the light of Christ Jesus — that the light of His presence may radiate through us, throughout our days! Remember, let us hold fast to John’s declaration in 1st John 2:8 — that, in Christ, — the Light of the World — ‘darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining!’ Let us continue to put on display the true light, Jesus, throughout our days, Highland.

See you Sunday.

Enjoy your weekend,

Rob

May We Always Be Thankful.

grateful to those who’ve given

Highland,

I hope you all had a restful Memorial Day Weekend. We certainly did! We enjoyed a slow, quiet weekend with friends and family. Highland, the fact that we can enjoy the security of this great nation is a gift in and of itself. To those who’ve given all, resulting in us relishing within our freedom, is a sacrifice that deserves our deepest gratitude.

Emma & Noah at the MercyMed Gala

Noah’s been away the last two weeks. He is Summer staff for Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters. He completed his staff training then came home to enjoy the extended, holiday weekend. We like to pretend he came home because he deeply missed his parents, but we really know he came home to see his girlfriend, Emma! Ha!ha! Even still, we appreciated spending time with him while he was home. From enjoying slow dinners to watching movies, we savored the moments we had together. He returned Monday to welcome his first group of campers at Snowbid – about 600 of them! He will remain at Snowbird of the rest of the Summer, both leading students down the Nantahala River as a river guide, and leading students in their Small Group Sessions, as they consider God’s Word. I am so proud of my son!

He’s now getting behind the wheel!

Luke turned 15 this pastTuesday! We spent the day celebrating him! As evening fell, he thanked both Carrie and me, saying that he thinks that turning 15 has been one of his best birthdays. Alongside a lunch at Tropical Smoothie with his Uncle and a stellar, homemade Strawberry Cake made by his Grandmother, he also passed his Driver’s Knowledge Test, earning his Learner’s License! He wanted to get behind the wheel immediately! This new milestone certainly helped to make his birthday extra special!

Service begins at 10am.

our series through matthew

As we reignited our series through Matthew, we are nearing the end of the Sermon on the Mount. Last Sunday, we took on this text, Matthew 7:7-11:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Highland, out of this passage, allow me expound on three over-arching points that are essential to us at this point within our series.

  1. Honor God Because He is Good

Though we are created in the image of God, that image is marred by the sickness of sin. Jesus acknowledges both sides of that coin when noting that, though our nature is evil, we still desire to give good gifts. These “glimpses of good” we see throughout human relationships are simply a manifestation of the goodness of God. He is the only source of good in this world. As we repent, declaring Jesus to be Lord, our hearts are transformed by the Holy Spirit, becoming submissive to the Lord. This results in our hearts becoming more agreeable with and like the Lord, while also allowing us to taste and see that He, and He alone, is good!

2. Asking Denotes Humility

Furthermore, if we acknowledge that we bear the image of God, then our hearts confess to Him being Lord. If He is God, then the nature of our asking, seeking, knocking, etc… must be coated in jaw-dropping humility. Our pursuit of the Lord in prayer, therefore, must be a pursuit for more of Him, not the pursuit of getting our wants and needs met — a desire for His heart, not just His hand. To rest more deeply in His presence is the deepest longing of our hearts, not a desired “yes” or “no.”

3. Desiring God Because He’s God

David, a man described to be after the Lord’s heart, explains the goal of his ‘asking, seeking, knocking’ — “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Because the Lord is good, His presence is our only good. When our hearts take confidence in this truth, then we experience His presence as our fullness of joy, come what may! The “yes” or the “no” become immaterial, Highland.

Prepping our Hearts for Sunday’s Sermon

Acknowledging the Lord to be Almighty is essential to move forward into the Sunday’s text and fully grab hold of what Jesus preaches. As we near the narrow gate and His dismissal of some who call upon Him, may we all seek and celebrate the Lord simply because He is God. He is worthy of all of our worship. To prepare for Sunday, please read Matthew 7:12-23. To listen to prior sermons in this series, check out our audio page.

Elizabeth Davis was baptized!

Season of Testimonies Concluding

As this season of testimonies concludes, what a vibrant celebration of life-in-Christ we’ve experienced – including two baptisms! In Christ, our real life is hidden, therefore to seek the Lord is to live, Highland! Drawing from Colossians 3, Paul tells believers we must set our minds on things above. In so doing, we pursue His honor, not our own, which is our purpose – knowing the Lord and making Him known. That’s what these testimonies have accomplished – the Lord’s people making Him known - glorifying in Him! Great job, everyone!

While having lunch today with a dear friend, he said to me that He is convinced that Scripture is true because he observes this prevailing sickness throughout this world, which Scripture rightly diagnoses as sin. He went on to say that Scripture also prescribes the only remedy, which is Christ alone. If I could identify a common thread throughout all of the testimonies we’ve heard, it would certainly be that the remedy to the ailments of our hearts is Christ alone, Highland. As we continue to journey through life together, let us continue to hold fast to God’s Word, which directs our hearts in this manner – and let us live:

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:12-17).

Our series through Matthew

As we return to our series through Matthew this Sunday, we pick back up in the 7th chapter. Our starting point would be Matthew 7:7-11. Read through and refresh with me your hearts and minds, as we turn our attention once more to the Gospel of Matthew. See below our text:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

We will first flyover what we’ve already covered in Matthew 7 (verses 1-6), then land upon the passage found above. Excited for the Lord has for us, Highland.

Truth Spring Trade School Graduation

To those who made Truth Spring Trade School’s Graduation, thank you for coming! I appreciate us all having the chance to celebrate these students’ successes! Truth Spring Academy also closes out another strong academic year, Highland. Jude will graduate on to middle school. This means that this is the first time that I will be teaching without having one of my sons attend Truth Spring Academy with me. While I am still processing, I can say from the gallows of my heart that I am so proud of the education both Luke and Jude have received through the academy! Highland, thank you for being so very willing to open our doors to our students, even my sons.

“There's a little tan building around the corner. I say it's yellow because the sun seems to shine brighter there. Where there's a tear in the fabric of reality, where Hood meets Heaven. I go there every morning and the greetings are genuine the smiles broad and the laughter like a tingling in the voices of strangers; God sits among us as we chat and sip coffee. White, black, old, young, homeless, housed, the upright and the crippled, for those moments we sit in paradise.”

Doors open wide with a welcome from Jesus Christ. Monday—Friday, 8:30am—11:30am.

Highland cafe’

The Highland Cafe’ continues to open wide our doors with a welcome from Jesus Christ and a warm cup of coffee. Each weekday morning from 8:30-11:30 offers you the chance to come and serve our neighbors, in honor of our Lord. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee, too! Come, serve and be served, all, in the name of Christ Jesus. Furthermore, snacks and coffee essentials, like cream and sugar, would be most appreciated.

Camp Rock Eagle

This week, a group of students from Truth Spring Academy attended Rock Eagle. Rock Eagle is a camp for the environmental sciences in the state of Georgia put on by the University of Georgia. The kids took hikes, canoed and learn about the world around them! We celebrate God’s creation, along with the beauty and the majesty of His handiwork!

Highland, how my heart abounds in gratitude over your generous hospitality! Thanks for opening wide our doors to our students. Earlier this week, I was talking with a parent who was dealing with her son’s misconduct. We addressed the matter in the office. She then began to tell me how much she loves Truth Spring Academy. Made my week! Thanks for helping make possible.

Speaking of Truth Spring Academy, enrollment is open for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. To access our Interest Form, please visit our website at www.truthspringacademy.org. After reaching our website, please hover over the “Parent Info” tab and select “Interest Form.” Or, click here.
